For more details on overcoming depression with food, I am going to share a bit more below. Since I can remember, I’ve always loved food, who doesn’t though right? But that doesn’t mean that food has always loved me back. As a child, I was a very picky eater, but I had my things that I ate and enjoyed, and as I later came to understand, I developed some bad eating habits that to this day still affect me. For one, I used to eat way too fast, so fast that I would choke on most meals that I ate. It was scary, I never knew when it was coming, and each time that I started to choke, I would have a mini freakout, realize it was all in my head, and I would be left with a cloud of anxiety over my head. Food became a safe place for me, a place to self-sooth when I was down, I would stuff my face when I wanted to shut the world out, instead of having that honest and hard conversation with a friend or loved one, I would eat and wait for that bad feeling to go away so that I could get back to my happy self. I thought this was okay because I didn’t know that I was doing it. I thought it was normal to and safe to eat a lot of food whenever things got tough. But as time went on I started to realize just how much harm it was causing me. Getting to the root of the problem, I became aware of the fact that anything traumatic that I experienced as a child was repressed and replaced by eating. Whenever things got tough, scary or out of control, I would eat to self-soothe, instead of sitting with that feeling and seeing where it was really coming from. Food is so emotional, it makes us feel so much, a good meal can trigger pleasant memories of picking fresh strawberries with our parents as a child, or it can trigger dark memories, things we would rather keep out. But the beauty of it all is that we can find ways to reconnect to those emotions, to overcome our need and want to stuff our faces and hide our feelings, because this is an unhealthy place, a place where we feed our dark desires and wreak havoc on our bodies. If we instead turn to those feelings and begin to go through a process that allows us to break free of these bad habits, we can start to heal ourselves from the inside out. I’m sure you’ve heard the term “food is medicine,” maybe it made sense to you when you heard it, or maybe it didn’t. Either way, we have to realize that what we are putting into our bodies, has a great effect on not only how we feel, but who we become. If we keep investing crap in our system, over time our bodies will respond in a way that lines up with the poor quality of food we are taking in. If we instead take in the right things, we can start to feel the benefits of good quality going into our bodies. But while we might understand that eating foods that are good for you is far better than eating foods that are processed and of low quality, what we often miss is the fact that we are greatly affected by not just what we eat, but HOW we eat it. You can eat the exact same meal twice, in two totally different situations, and have very different outcomes. I don’t care how healthy of a meal you are eating, if you are stuffing your face while on the computer, working away, barely paying attention to even chew or taste your food, that healthy food might actually cause some problems. You see, often times when I eat, especially in the past, I notice that I am eating fast and from a place of anxiety. I used to not know that I had anxiety, but the more I tuned into how I felt, the more I started to see that I suffered from serious anxiety and that I was eating from an anxious place. The problem with this is that instead of dealing with my anxiety, I’m taking it out on food, thinking that the eating process will help it go away, but it never does, it only makes it worse, and it sends a signal to my body that I want more anxiety, thus building on the cycle. I am here to let you know that there is another way, a way that my wife and I have worked tireless on to share with you, she is a holistic nutritionist and transformation coach, and I am an expert in food and helping people uncover the patterns that have plagued them.
