Yesterday I traveled back to my hometown to join a surprise party for my dear ‘auntie’s’ 90th birthday. Born less than a month before my mom, they became friends 20 years later when they married two cousins, one of whom was my dad. The couples married and began building families within a year of each other and we celebrated holidays together every year for decades. My aunt is the last survivor of those two couples but she has long been the center of gravity for all of the kids, cousins and friends of the family that have developed over the past several decades. My brother and our spouses were deeply happy to be able join this celebration of a life still well lived.
