Staring the year with a sweet surprise for Mr. M., the youngest member of the Syrian family we helped sponsor to Canada last year who happens to have his eleventh birthday today!
Knowing his skills on the soccer field, I was inspired to attempt to make a cake with a soccer theme. But given my ignorance of the sport, the fact that I like making layered/composed cakes (and the restriction of some ingredients i.e. vanilla extract that isn’t considered Halal), and having a preference for edible decorations, this was the result.
It’s a three layer banana cake with dulce de leche (swiss meringue) buttercream that’s topped with a ground pistachio turf, soccer goal post made of (non-edible) bamboo skewers with (gelatin-free) strawberry cords that I weaved/crocheted together, and a white chocolate soccer ball that Mr. M can flick “kick” into the net to score.
I took a page from a dessert we encountered at El Celler de Can Roca in 2011 (http://ift.tt/2isQrsj...) – a tribute to Messi – where the diner was instructed to knock the bonbon into the goal cup while the sound of cheering crowds played in the background (I'll use this clip on my cell phone when it comes time for the kick-off: http://youtu.be/aHg3axjRdIo?t=29s).
It might not be the most polished, but at least it's Halal!
