If you spent your childhood in Brazil, like I did, you probably spent an enormous amount of time hugging a condensed milk can, scraping the bottom with a spoon (or your finger) after your mom/grandma used it.
It is definitely comfort food, the one that takes you back to childhood. I still remember my school served bread with condensed milk (spread on top like butter) on Wednesdays. It was everybody´s favourite dessert. :-)
The point is: condensed milk is the foundation of a vast number of Brazilian desserts - childrens´ birthday parties cannot exist without condensed milk - and condensed milk cans have a place of honour in the heart of all Brazilians.
So I am showing you one of my favourites: Beijinhos (Little kisses). This is one of the sacred trinity of traditional sweets that must be served in all birthday parties - the other two are Brigadeiro (chocolate truffles) and Cajuzinho (Little cashews).
It´s very easy to make, and freezes beautifully.
RECIPE:
1 can of condensed milk
1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon of dried shredded coconut, no sugar added
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Decoration:
whole cloves
shredded coconut
unsalted butter
Preparation:
Put the condensed milk, butter, and the coconut in a heavy bottomed pan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for about 10-15 minutes until the mixture thickens and starts to pull away from the sides and bottom of the pan.
Pour the cream in a lightly greased (with unsalted butter) plate. Set aside until it is completely cooled (you may put the plate in the refrigerator or freezer until it cools, but I prefer to wait and leave it in room temperature).
Place the shredded coconut on a shallow plate. Grease your hands with a bit of unsalted butter. With the help of a small spoon, scoop a small amount of the cooled cream in the palm of your hand and roll it until you form a smooth ball. Roll it in coconut until you cover it completely. Stick 1 clove on top of the coconut kiss. You can freeze them for a few months.
NOTE:The cloves are for decoration and extra flavor. They should not be eaten.
